Study and Teaching

Overview of our study programs and courses

Neurocognitive psychology deals with understanding the relationships between brain functions and human perception, cognition, and behavior. It draws from general and experimental psychology to investigate fundamental processes such as perception and action, visual search and scene search, multisensory perception, the sense of agency, and cognitive control. A central area of neurocognitive psychology follows a basic scientific approach with the aim of describing and explaining perceptual, cognitive, and action-related phenomena in the context of brain structure and function. Methods from experimental psychology (e.g., psychophysics, behavioral studies, eye-tracking, VR) are often combined with neuroscientific techniques (e.g., fMRI, EEG) to explore how people perceive, interpret, and interact with their environment. This also includes investigating how visual information is processed in tasks such as visual or scene-based search, how different sensory modalities interact in multisensory perception, and how cognitive control mechanisms support goal-directed behavior and the experience of self-regulation.

The Chair of Neurocognitive Psychology also oversees the international Master's program in Neuro-Cognitive Psychology (NCP). This research-oriented graduate program provides in-depth knowledge and practical skills at the interface between experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience. The NCP program places particular emphasis on a solid education in key areas such as perception, cognition, and brain function, and specifically prepares students for an academic career in research and teaching. From 2004 to 2024, the program was part of the prestigious Elitenetzwerk Bayern and was awarded the official quality seal "Top 10 International Master’s Degree Courses Made in Germany" in 2008 for its excellent scientific training and international orientation.
